Spud is a protector of the vegetable patch. He stands guard by the edge of the garden, on the watch for hares and rabbits that like to dig up the garden and steal the vegetables. Whenever they come near, he jumps onto their backs and rides them out of the garden, laughing hysterically as he goes.   Pip appears as dusk falls, playing his bamboo flute and gracefully dancing amongst the trees and shrubs. He plays a soft lullaby and soon all the birds in the trees above are huddling together, slowly drifting off to sleep. As dawn appears again on the horizon, Pip appears again, this time his music is more lively and he springs around the garden as the wildlife around him awakes and stirs in the morning dew.

Pod is a very methodical character. The most calm and relaxed of all the Hoblins, nothing much really bothers him. Pod likes to sit on his leaf all day just thinking and smiling to himself. He will occasionally look up when he notices a bird or rabbit. It is oblivious to his presence as Pod watches it pass by.

Spring is the most athletic of all the Hoblins. He rushes around the undergrowth and the back of the garden keeping his beady eyes open for any movement. As soon as anything approaches, he jumps out laughing and giggling at the startled birds. Spring enjoys jumping around the garden, leaping from bird table to the wheelbarrow, knocking anything over in his path.   Puck looks after the birds in the garden. He likes their company, and will sometimes feed them seeds from his hand. Puck watches out for cats as they feed. If he sees any come near, he gets his catapult at the ready, taking aim with an acorn. The cats scarper, they know that Puck is a good shot.

River spends all his time at night by the garden pond. When no one is around, he will put the conch shell to his lips and play a haunting melody. The fish in the pond feel attracted to the music and rise to the water’s surface. River likes to watch the fish dancing through the water, their scales shimmering in the moonlight.

Charles Valton French 1851-1918 Le Cerf Bramant Bronze with medium to Dark Brown Patina Inscribed About the Artist: Charles Valton was born in Pau, France on January 26th 1851. He was a student of both Antoine Louis Barye and Emmanuel Fremiet, capturing the finest points of both masters. From Barye, Valton learned the importance of detail and definition of his subjects and from Fremiet he received the sensitivity and ability to project his subjects in a natural state. From the age of fifteen Valton spent much of his time at the Jardin des Plantes with Barye and Fremiet who were both directors at that famous Paris zoological garden. Valton exhibited over seventy models at the Paris Salon from 1868 until 1914 winning several medals. In 1883 he became Professor of sculpture at the Germain Pilon School and in 1906 Valton received the Cross of the Legion d'Honneur. He is best known for his models of the big cats as well as for using a mixture of materials in his sculpture such as white marble to depict snow or the use of granite as a base for his animals.

Burl Jones Desert Sheep Ram Bronze About The Artist: West Virginia, its rich traditions and culture nurtured an artistic sensibility in Burl Jones that would build into one of the country's most respected careers in bronze sculpture. After graduation from West Virginia University, a two year stint in the United States Public Health Service brought him to the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana. This exposure to Native American culture, western wildlife and frontier ethic would prove to be a major influence on his later work. While still in college Burl married his childhood sweetheart, Eunice. Forty-six years later, they have two sons, Mark and Allen. Mark is a physician living and practicing in Billings, Montana. Allen is a professional writer and is currently writing fiction and editing for a major publishing house. He also lives in Montana. Eunice has found an artistic voice through her wonderful, innovative pottery and a growing collection of poetry. After nearly twenty-five years of dentistry, Burl shifted gears several years ago to focus entirely on his sculpture. Clay and wax are his mediums now, and provide a way of expressing his love for those interests that have dominated his life. Wildlife, mountain men, Native Americans, fishermen and hunters all come to have a life of their own under his skilled hands. Over two hundred original sculptures have been produced in limited editions and sold to collectors worldwide. West Virginia is still home. His works are available from their studio-gallery near Sissonville as well as major galleries throughout the country
