Asante Stool   Baga Drum   Baga Serpent Headdress

Asante stools are usually made for a chief when he takes office and are adorned with beads or copper nails and sheets. This stool is a ceremonial piece carved with an arched seat set over a foot, referring to a proverb or a symbol of wisdom.

Extremely Old Baga Drum   The origins of the usage of these snakes is not clear. Its uses are varied; protection of young boys at circumcision, a cure for droughts, and perhaps as a spirit at funerals. Usually asexual, appearing sometimes in groups, it has been ascribed as having the power to reconcile the water spirits with the bush spirits. The age of this headdress is approximately 75 years.

Benin (Bini-Edo)Bronze head The opening in the head was to hold an elephant's tusk as these were originally meant as altar pieces for shrines to the head and usually represented kings or the ancestors of kings.

The numerous bronze heads and figures cast by Benin Metalworkers were created for the royal palace. This piece characteristically has its neck covered with stylized coral beads leaving the chin exposed. The thinness of the cast and the refined skills demonstrated on this piece are very rare and special   Statue of people in boat

Colonial Portuguese Captain From Nigeria In Gabon

Bronze Head On Woven Base Of Nigeria   Numerous bronze heads and figures were cast by the Yuroba tribe in Nigeria, where the new Oba (king) would dedicate an altar to his predecessor. The leopard was the sole property of the Oba and the royal animal. A mask like this one was worn either by the Oba or by the major dignitaries. A number of bronze figures and masks have been found in the Lower Niger area. The loop on the top of the head permitted the mask to be hung in a place of honor when not being worn. Although not dated it is believe to be about 60-70 years old.

These chairs, made by the Gurage or Kaffa people of Ethiopia, are a feature of their nomadic life in that they are easily portable. The design appears to be influenced by Tanzanian art traditions. Although not African, we have included this in our collection because the design is so striking. The chair on the right is slightly taller (36" X 19 1/2") than the one on the left. The chairs can be purchased separately at $3000 each.

Lobi Chair   Lovers   Makonde Helmet Mask

In remote villages in Burkina Faso it is still possible to come across elderly men reclining on chairs such as this one, smoking their pipes. Those chairs are passed from generation to generation until their legs wear away. This is a male chair with very rare crocodile shaped carving on the top of the chair. These chairs are also used by couples on the first night of their union as the chair's shape "opens" the legs of the new bride so that she can accept the new husband. Modern in form, these chairs complement any style of contemporary decor.

'Lovers'   Antique African Makonde Helmet Mask with Wood and Human Hair from Mozambique. Helmet masks are among the most well-known Makonde masks. The mask is a lipico mask and was used during initiation rites for boys. They are placed over the wearer's head to conceal their identity. The masks are carved from a light weight wood with realistic features and human hair is often inset in them to increase their realism. The boys are told that the lipico has been conjured back from the dead and that they must overpower and unmask it during a grueling ceremony.

Elephant Mask Of Cameroon

African Wooden Masked Warrior   In order to stimulate and obtain a spirit's protection, Kongo people hammer nails into its wooden representation and shout at it .Particularly striking in this figure is the contrast between the delicate treatment of the face and the roughness of the nails. The open mouth appears to shout or scream in response to the pounding of the nails.

For a long time these heads were thought to represent an Oba, but today some Western scholars believe that they might be the representation of prisoners. The style of Benin heads evolved from thin casts with prominent chins to thicker casts showing a high collar extending to the mouth and a coiffure framed by two vertical "wings".

Baga Tribal Drum from Guinea & Guinea-Bissau.

Dogon figures are predominantly associated with the ancestor cult. They are carved either for personal or family use or, if they commemorate the foundation of a community, are worshiped by the village. The figure shows typical elongated features, crossed scarifications on the body, angular features and a crested coiffure incised with chevrons. Believed to be 19th century. This piece was part of a collection in New York acquired in 1973.   Wooden Elephants
